Mike wants justice for the victims. He steals the lawyer's file from his law firm because the lawyer's clerk told him that the file contains proof that the lawyer broke the law. He quits the firm, and goes to work with two lawyers who help homeless people. He now earns $30,000 a year and his wife files for divorce. He decides to sue his former law firm. He finds out that the firm transferred the clerk to another city to get him out of the way.
Grisham adds drama to the tale by telling how the law firm acts against Mike and by reciting many stories about the homeless and their problems. In fact, Grisham spends a lot of time discussing the issues surrounding homeless people and the way the government treats them. The book does not move at a fast pace. However, readers will enjoy reading about the legal maneuvers, whether Mike's litigation is successful, and if he can avoid prison for his theft.
