Before you start reading this story, you should adjust your expectations. You're not really reading a Doctor Who story, you're reading a Holly Black story which is not necessarily a bad thing. Black provides a well written character driven story about adolescence, inner demons and PTSD. It masquerades as a murder mystery for much of the story and ultimately the Doctor is a secondary character. He is much more sympathetic in Black's incarnation than he appears on TV, but still witty and dry in almost a Lemony Snicket fashion. Overall, I was surprised at how much I enjoyed the story. I wonder how Black would do writing an actual episode of the show.
